Radon is a naturally occurring colourless, odourless, radioactive gas that can affect properties of all types, ages, locations and uses. It is formed by the radioactive decay of the small amounts of Uranium that occur naturally in all rocks and soils. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking.
If you are moving into a property it’s important to check if it’s in a Radon Affected Area, or whether radon levels have been measured in the property.
We offer a simplified mapping system that shows detailed information about radon potential in England and Wales. The work was carried out jointly by the Public Health England and the British Geological Survey and was based on the results of measurements of radon in 460,000 homes.
If your current or future home is located in a possible Radon area it’s not necessarily mean there is a radon problem in the property; the only way to find out whether it is above or below the Action Level is to carry out a radon measurement in an existing property.
